Questionnaire Response

Don Woodstock - Mayoral Candidates

What got you into politics?

I have always been involved in the community from a youngster in Jamaica.  Giving a voice to people who are otherwise shy or fearful of voicing their opinions, is something I have felt the need to do.  Especially when the ideas would be beneficial to more than just a chosen few.  Taking a stand for what is right and not necessarily popular, is something I have always held dear to my heart – following in the footsteps of my grandfather.  Having a vision!

As an environmental activist and community leader this has propelled me to seek public office to effect meaningful changes.

What experience will you bring to compliment your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

Small Business owner in the security business, JamRock Security – 365 days of the year, I get to see first-hand the fear and concerns of our citizens who have been victimized by people breaking into their vehicles, homes, garages, the street violence and having the opportunity to offer security solutions to these folks is one of my strengths – “The mayor of Winnipeg has to know how the citizens feel and what they are going through first-hand.”  This will be a huge asset to the job.

As someone who has never held elected office, but has lobbied the City of Winnipeg in making meaningful changes by lobbying Council members, presenting to Committees and presenting during Council meetings,  I am no stranger to the workings of Council.

  • Lobbied Council to change ‘Garbage Day’ to ‘Recycle Day’ in City literature & in the media
  • Lobbied Council for the larger blue recycling bins & remove the metal bins in alleys
  • After the current Council turned them away, I lobbied Council to have Homes for Heroes build in Winnipeg, one councillor saw fit to have the discussion with them and they are building in Winnipeg today.

Actions not words will be my asset.

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

As a minority, I am a victim of racism and am sympathetic to anyone who is experiencing this.  Disingenuous processes that are in place for guiding our employment and political society, traditions & values needs a hard discussion, as unpopular as it may be to discuss.

Let’s look at the processes of the City and how they conduct business.  They are elected & employed by the people to serve the people, but it seems they have forgotten what Customer Service looks like.  I would like to return City Hall to the people, make the system work for them instead of against them.

Studies after studies, reviews after reviews, taxpayer dollars out the door by the millions.  It is now time to take all of that and put it into action.

That is my stand as your Mayor!

Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

As a man who believes in always ‘keeping it real’, I am not ‘any of the above’ candidates.  Our city is almost bankrupt from this current administration of 8 years, and we need to get back down to basics – money in the bank!

The taxpayer can rely on me to do just that, and more!

As someone who has never been elected to office, but has lobbied for meaningful change in this city, it is important to recognize that people with vision, integrity and conviction will never quit on you.

I love it when someone says to me, “Hey, you can’t do that!”  It emboldens me to get it done.  If the issue is worth fighting for, then I will never quit and Winnipeggers you are worth fighting for!  Quitters never win, and Winners never quit!
