Questionnaire Response

Janice Lukes - Waverley West

What got you into politics?

long story. I grew up in the country, at a time where so many people volunteered at the local hall or at school, or in 4-H clubs. My mom was the most amazing volunteer. I credit much of my desire to give back – to her.

Later in life, when I found out I was having triplet boys, I started looking at my neighbourhood through ‘a mother’s eyes’ and saw many deficiencies. no pathways, few playstructures, no spray pad – etc.  I started working with many volunteer groups to see if other’s wanted to improve our neighbourhood. I joined far too many committees to learn more about the neighbourhoods.

I became certified in fund development, and started raising money for groups, for active & safe routes to school, for school playground improvements, for city wide cycling & walking pathways, for many projects at the St Norbert Farmers Market, for history and heritage projects, and for bio-retention systems. I worked with levels of government to secure funding for many projects, and through this work, I was encouraged by other elected officials – to run for City Councillor in the St Norbert – South Winnipeg ward.  So I did.

What experience will you bring to compliment your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

I will bring over 20 years of community work to draw on as Councillor, eight of those years as a Councillor. The role of Councillor is one that is most connected to the people and neighbourhoods.

I have travelled to many countries throughout the world and would never have imagined that I am now working with residents  – from Indonesia, India, Nepal, Vietnam and so many more countries that I visited. Its an incredible connection to have with residents. Waverley West ward is one of the most multi cultural and diverse areas of Winnipeg – I want to bring continued awareness to the richness of our community, and to celebrate the freedom and life we have here in Winnipeg.

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

Winnipeg needs to focus on recovering from the drastic impacts of Covid 19. I’ll be focusing on economic and social recovery initiatives, community safety, and improving the delivery of core city services. I’ll also be focusing on building the new $100 million recreation campus and $15 million fire hall in the Waverley West ward.
I’ll be working with the Mayor and Council, so Winnipeg can develop deeper working relationship with the Provincial and Federal governments, so they can better deliver on their core responsibilities of healthcare and housing. Now more than ever, all levels of government need to focus and work together to recover from Covid 19 impacts and I will do all I can to enable improved partnerships.  Working together is how we will improve the quality of life for everyone.
The Waverley West ward is a rapidly growing, diverse and multicultural community. l look forward to continue working closely with residents to ensure Winnipeg provides a high quality of life and bright future for our children.

Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

I’ve been a Councillor for two terms (eight years) serving the residents of south Winnipeg. It is an incredible honour to work with so many amazing individuals to make our community safer and stronger, and to continue improving our quality of life here in Winnipeg.
